Relates to models WH099, WH121, WM121 & WM161.

Place the flask on the benchtop and put the turret on top of the brass collar thread.  Holding the turret firmly by the top of the black cover skirt where you can feel a metal ring underneath the skirt, turn the turret anticlockwise for ½ a turn, then turn it clockwise until it is firmly attached.

  1. The tip may be blocked. Unblock it using a pin to remove the debris.
  2. The unit may not have enough liquid nitrogen in the unit to fully pressurise.

Check the flask is at least half full of liquid nitrogen; Ensure the turret is screwed on firmly to the flask; that a number 3 tip is attached and the regulator handle is positioned alongside the probe at the front of the unit.

Check the number of the spray tip, which is engraved beside the tip orifice,  on the Cryospray.   Number 1 or 2 spray tip, give an intermittent, or very fine spray for the use in delicate areas such as the eye.  Change the tip to a Number 3 or 4 for a strong spray.

The liquid nitrogen boils constantly and builds up pressure within the flask.  The safety valve releases the pressure as required.  You will hear a hissing noise from the safety valve when it is operating.  This is normal.  At no time should the safety valve be covered over to stop the “leaking”.

If the regulator handle is sitting at the side of the unit, the regulator valve may be kept open, causing the unit to vent continuously.  Position the regulator at the front of the unit at all times, even when not in use.

If the unit is spraying constantly from the probe when not in use, or leaking from the top of the turret and safety valve, it may have a blockage in the regulator caused by contamination in the nitrogen. Give the unit a short, gentle shake, keeping yourself clear of the safety valve.  When it stops spraying and has “settled”, see if this has helped dislodge the blockage.  If not, the unit should be returned to Walmay for a service.  See Page 5 of the Use and Maintenance Instruction leaflet for the Cryospray.

If you need to top up the Cryospray with more nitrogen during surgery, lift up the knurled Safety Valve on top of the unit and hold it until the pressure is released. Let the Safety Valve go and undo the turret.

Overtime, the nitrogen dries out the threads of the flask and turret.  Using a sparing amount of WD40 silicone on the threads will help lubricate them and make it easier to fasten the turret.

Frosting on the outside of the flask and the turret may indicate the turret requires servicing and the vacuum in the bottle may also have deteriorated. Return the unit to Walmay, see instructions for Returning the Cryospray to Walmay.

You have received a replacement probe for your WH099 or WH121 model and it will not screw into the probe port.

  1. Check that you are screwing it into the port under the regulator (handle) and not the safety valve outlet which is at the back of the unit and a smaller hole.
  2. Maybe the thread from the broken probe is still inside the port?  This can be removed using a sharp tool such as tweezers to get a grip on the thread and unscrew it.

Do not pull the thread out as it will damage the port thread.
